Hythe Guided Town Walks - Hythe Civic Society

Hythe Canal Golf Course

Whether you are a history buff or just enjoy a gentle stroll around interesting places, the Hythe town walk is for you. Throughout the summer months, Hythe Civic Society’s team of knowledgeable and enthusiastic guides will both walk and talk you around the town taking in all the sights: starting at the Town Hall the guides will delight you with stories of local events and people, Hythe’s relationship with France over the years and the history of the Cinque Ports. Heading out through the undercroft with its ‘interesting’ inscription you pass many fascinating and historic buildings, several with their own unique features, including the King’s Head, St John’s Almshouses, Oaklands and many more. You will stroll along the towpath of the Royal Military Canal – built to keep Napoleon at bay but not completed until 1809 when the threat of invasion was long past – then through the High Street and up to the eleventh century church of St Leonard with its famous ossuary – one of only two in the UK. With over 1,000 years of history, Hythe is truly charming – do join a Hythe Civic Society guided walk.
