Parks and Open Spaces

Hythe is fortunate to be home to a number of beautiful parks, open spaces and children’s play areas, which provide residents and visitors opportunities for sports, recreation and leisure.

Hythe Town Council takes pride in all its open spaces and parks and is constantly striving to ensure they are maintained to a high standard.

Many of our open spaces include children’s play areas, sports and exercise facilities. There is Green Gym equipment at Oaklands which is free to use by all residents.

The Town Council maintains adult, junior and mini football pitches, two hard and two grass tennis court and a bowling green at South Road. For further information visit our South Road Sports Facilities.

 

Hythe Green Open Space

Hythe Green

Hythe Green located off Portland Road and St Leonards Road. The Green is an ideal space for all resident to utilize and enjoy the different facilities.

Hythe Green is made up of roughly 16 acres of mainly open space, including a children’s play area with a zipwire and a hard surface area which is lit during the winter months, to allow all year use. This is perfect for a kickabout with friends.

Hythe Green is an ideal space for children to play on in the plays area or the hard surfaced area. You can have a picnic on the grass or sitting at the picnic benches provided. Or simply enjoy the space for walking your dog.

Several different events are held at The Green during the year, these includes bootfairs, fetes, funfairs, a circus, food festivals and dog shows to name but a few.

In September 2022, we had wooden play sculptures added to The Green for families to enjoy, with thanks to Stephen Bailey Landscapes for installing them.

Palmarsh Recreation Ground

Palmarsh Recreation Ground located in Palmarsh just off Burmarsh Road. The recreation ground is an ideal space for all residents to utilize and enjoy the facilities.

The recreation ground is made up of roughly 2 acres of mainly open space, including a children’s play area.

The recreation ground is an ideal space for children to play on the play equipment or enjoy the open space. You can have a picnic on the grass or sitting at the picnic benches provided. Or to simply enjoy while walking your dog.

Eaton Lands Meadow

Eaton Lands

Eaton Lands is located between Hythe and Saltwood and was donated to the town by the Deedes family in the 1920s.

Eaton Lands is made up of roughly 30 acres of mainly open space, including allotments, woodlands, a magnificent wildflower meadow and, since February 2020, a Community Orchard.

Eaton Lands is an ideal space for children to play on the utility area which includes a football goal and sports wall.  You can have a picnic on the grass or sitting at the picnic benches provided.  Why not meander through the wildflower meadow in the summer months or enjoy a gentle walk through the woodland/quarry area.

The planting of the trees in the community orchard was the culmination of many years work by the Hythe Civic Society in conjunction with Hythe Town Council and many volunteers.

Oaklands Park

Oaklands

Oaklands is located off Stade Street, behind the Town Council Offices and next to the Canal. Oaklands was donated to the Town by Davis Oaklands, it is an ideal space for all resident to utilize and enjoy the different facilities.

Oaklands is made up of mainly open space, including a children’s play area, green gym equipment and the Sensory Garden in remembrance of Princess Diana. Oaklands is home to Hythe’s Bandstand, during the summer months the Bandstand is used for concerts of local bands to play and share their music. Oaklands is an ideal space for children to play in the secure play area. You can have a picnic on the grass or sitting at one of the many benches provided, while watching the resident squirrels playing in the trees. Or simply enjoy while walking your dog.

Horn Street Rec Ground

Horn Street Recreation Ground

Horn Street Recreation Ground located just off Horn Street.  The recreation ground is an ideal space for all resident to utilize and enjoy the facilities.

The recreation ground is made up of roughly 4 acres of mainly open space including, a children’s play area.  The recreation ground is an ideal space for children to play in the play area. It is an ideal place for a picnic or just to enjoy the peace and tranquillity of the recreation ground.

 

In August 2022 the play area has been refurbished and new play equipment installed and was opened by The Mayor of Hythe, Councillor J Martin and the Deputy Mayor, Councillor Anita Jones

 

Skate Park

Hythe Skate Park is located off Lucy’s Walk.  Hythe skatepark is made up of metal ramps on a tarmac base.

The skatepark features a back and forth run with a quarter pipe and flat bank either side of a funbox. The skatepark is free for all resident to utilise and enjoy.

South Road Pitches

South Road Sports Facilities

The South Road Sports Facilities are located just off South Road, next to Hythe’s Sports Pavilion. The sports facilities are made up of roughly 11 acres of mainly sports pitches.

South Road is home to Hythe’s football pitches, grass and hard tennis courts and the grass bowling green.

The tennis and bowls courts are open to the public for hire seasonally from May – September, including the Easter weekend.
