The Mayor of Hythe, Doug Wade, helped members of the Hythe Green Preservation Society, The Bumblebee Conservation Trust, the Shepway Community Day Care Centre and Hythe Home Education Group to spread wildflower seed in the North East corner of Hythe Green on Thursday 29th August, as part of a drive to develop and conserve wildlife areas in Hythe.
Under the direction of Dr Nikki Gammans from the Bumblebee Conservation Trust, volunteers prepared and planted wildflowers along the North Wall in April.
Many people have commented on how much pleasure the flowers have given them – as well as how delightful the patchwork of colours on the Green have been since the Council have mowed less frequently. The bees and butterflies have also appreciated the wealth of wildflowers available!
Hythe Town Council have contributed £1,700 so far towards the project to enhance Hythe Green, encouraging wildflowers and with plans to manage and develop the hedgerow and woodland areas to make them more accessible and encourage diversity.
Hythe Town Council are hoping to encourage and support many more local, community projects aimed at developing wildlife in the future.
